Love In Color is an anthology of classic myths and folktales retold as modern day love stories. I was familiar with a few of the original stories, but most I found myself looking them up to learn more. The way the author took each story and centered it around love and modernized it was so clever and heartwarming. Especially considering how dark and often misogynistic the original stories are. The author even included her parents’ love story, told in such a way that it fit right in with all these mythic tales.
In honor of this collection of short stories, I decided to make a romantic cocktail to sip while reading. This cherry and bourbon drink is slightly sweet and the perfect companion to this book.
L’Amour en Rose Cocktail
- ½ cup fresh cherries, pitted
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1.5 oz bourbon
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ice cubes
- soda water (¼ cup or so)
In the bottom of a glass, combine the cherries, vanilla extract, bourbon, sugar and lemon juice. Muddle together until cherries are broken and juices are released (you can use the back of a wooden spoon if you don’t have a muddler).
Top with ice cubes and a small splash of club soda.
